While the behaviorally-oriented marketing is potentially frightening (and also potentially offers a way of organizing information on the internet; the Dewey Decimal System seems unlikely), Plaxo works in a conceptually similar way and is safe in my experience.  It just lets you hook up with friends.  Among others, Chris Pirillo (he founded Lockergnome) uses it.  Chris’ stuff is safe, too, or at least has been since I started corresponding with him sometime in the early 90s; I’d imagine he’s forgotten me.  Hey, and just to go totally off track; someone else I like though I’ve never met him in the flesh:  Brad.  One-man band, I like his music.
