Voices, Paths

This is NOT an allusion to X-men. Either the point is obvious–and I can find absolutely no way to say that in linear English, that’s poem or story material–or there probably was no point in the poem. The poem was written in June of 1983. This is August 19th of 2014.

paths
when i first met you
wandering in that pasture
(your face cast downwards
obscured
by your golden silky hair
you seemed so startled to see me!
like some wildwoods doe:
this, then, is man…)
you said (when
you’d overcome that somehow
wounded shyness)
you sought
a certain silence
that led, you were sure,
to wisdom or its path.
but i made you look
at the burning sky,
the rolling sward, the splendid
ranks of trees: o, i
seduced you quite gently
and had my will of you.
o, but then you strode away,
vibrant, head high-held,
and i…
head bowed, somber, speechless
i search
for that silence, that path
